Many people list these helmets as WW2, but even though they are identical, that’s not true. This is a post-war helmet. The condition is very good. This helmet is more accurate than the wartime ones. It has smoother sides and is made of high-quality steel. Much later, somewhere around the 60s, the Germans began to make helmets and paint them white.

Post WW2 German M38 paratrooper Fallschirmjager Helmet Stahlhelm 71 GSG9 This is a helmet I got from my 173rd guy. It is a mystery as to when and whom this helmet was acquired, what I do know is that it was acquired pre-1990. Other than that, there is no verified or documented history of it. I have been investigating this helmet for about the last year or so. I have 2 of these, both from the same vet. One has a strange liner where the stitching of the liner goes back to front North-South, not typically seen on these types of helmets where the liner stitching goes (east-west) and GSG9 straps, this one has a ww2 type straps (look at the pics). This helmet weighs 2.31 lbs. (shell weight) total weight with liner and straps is 2.8 lbs. Helmet has a rolled edge (4mm) with a fold line like WW2-type originals and it is size 71. This could be one of the press-formed shells that were surplus post-war 1948-50 there was a small batch of M40s and a small batch of M38s made post-war that have no stamps in them then there is an ultra high-end reproduction made by Dipko a Czechoslovakian company that made these using the same press machines and the same edge trimming machine they also used Chromium steel plating all surpluses in Poland, they didn’t make many of them and are very expensive and very hard to come by, this could be one of them. At 2.8 lbs as you stated it sounds like it cause by the original M38 and the Czech-made ones are the exact same except the milling line is crisper on the Czech-made version cause they re-engineered it to be electrical vs. A manual as they did at the Eisenhuttenwerk Thale factory during WWII, there was a press form guy and there was a guy cranking the edge trimmer bander like a can opener that’s why when you look at an original and look at the milling line they are not very straight at all late war M38’s are usually hit and miss and in my opinion had corners cut cause they were flying to get helmets out. So my family is from Germany my grandfather’s brother worked for Eisenhuttenwerk and later moved to West Germany and worked in fabrication over there for a while. He then worked as a foreman for Shuberth Werke. If I were you I would take out the liner and the chinstrap of that one and install in high-end liner and Chinstraps. Always see photos for details!
