I have been told it is a border guard helmet. It is solid with no cracks or dents in the metal. There are some scuff marks and blemishes on the outside as seen in the photos. The inside shows some surface rust. There is no liner. It’s a really nice piece overall. Please check all the photos and video. I welcome any information on what model this actually is.

Originating in the Ruhr mining region, this model of protective leather helmet became increasingly common across German mines starting in the early 1920s. This particular helmet shell is made from two quarter sections of sturdy full-grain leather, stitched together lengthwise. The seam is additionally reinforced with a sewn-on leather strip. Each side features three ventilation holes, punched and reinforced with hollow rivets. A leather visor is sewn onto the front and secured at both ends with rivets. There is a punched hole on the left side, which was used to hang the helmet. The thin leather lining is sewn on from the outside left, folded over the bottom edge of the helmet to the inside, and shaped into six rounded tabs above a surrounding sweatband area. The ends of the tabs are perforated, allowing a cord (not included) to be threaded through to adjust the fit of the helmet. This helmet is made for a medium-sized head with a circumference of 56 cm. The leather has retained its elasticity. Overall, considering its age, the helmet is in excellent condition, with only minor wear to the curved tabs of the liner. Weight – 390 gr. This is my second posting of this item. So, it has been digitally removed. If you are interested, let me know and I can show you the pics of a very nice decal. Up for sale here is a very nice condition WW2 Luftwaffe. The shell is a size 62 and the liner is size 55. It appears this was never issued or saw service use. What about the helmet shell paint as seen in the pictures? As you can see, there is a bit of paint chipping around the base of the helmet. I suspect this has more to do with storage issues, perhaps other helmets being stacked on it, etc. That same type of chipping isn’t seen around the top of the helmet, which would be evident if it saw field use. There is a lot of surviving paint there that is pristine, has all it’s rough texture coating and has not faded. It also has a single Luftwaffe eagle decal in nice shape with a bit of chipping here and there. Message me if you wish to see the unedited decal. On the interior as in the liner and chinstrap, these are almost mint. There is a bit of slight peeling on the leather liner outer edge but that’s it. The leather itself is very soft, probably the softest I’ve come across even with unissued helmets. The chinstrap is likewise very pliable but has formed itself over the years around the visor edge. There is still gray paint on the buckle and button grommets. Overall a great helmet and a nice example to add to any collection!
