German model 1940 Vulcanised fibre helmet. Nice example m40 Vulcanised fibre helmet, with an Italian war booty helmet liner!!! Germany reused and re-issued a lot of the materials coming out of the countries they invaded, and thus apparently a whole lot of Italian m33 liners ended up beiing issued into more civic helmets! Shell has no cracks, bumps or holes, obvious wear and paint losses, this one has been issued and clearly used. Factory semi gloss black finish. The shell is entierly made out of Vulcanised fibre, except for the rim and vent holes(coverd with rastered wire) wich are metal. The liner is the standard Italian m33 type leather liner, made out of tan leather, and in good supple condition. All it’s 8 “fingers” are complete. The Italian size is perforated into the leather and reads 59. There’s a stamp reading 54 on one of the tongues, but its size is definitly a 58/59 (US size 7 1/4 – 7 3/8). On the back of the liner, one of the tongues is stamped with Robert Lubstein. The Lubstein company was also one of the main manufacturers of Police Tchako’s in Vulcanised Fiber. Metal rim is stamped 06 on the inner side. The liner is attached to the helmet by split 3 split rivets, with each a fiber washer. The chinstrap is made out of black leather and is in good condition, I think it actually might be a genuine WH/Heer chinstrap, judging by the slits it has on the end where it’s attached to the liner, wich remind typically of the slits on standard WH chinstraps, where the securing rivet goes through. Most were colored black but this example is a true feldgrau color throughout the material and the outer shell painted with a flat feldgrau lacquer. This color must have been meant for Army use. Vulkan Fibre produced these helmets from 1935-36 and entered their helmet in the new helmet trials where the M35 steel helmet won out. Many surplus black ones went to fire departments during and after the war. I think this one is in very good to excellent condition, retaining most original paint. The liner and straps show a little wear but are still supple. The chin straps make me think motorized parade drivers. WWII German Italian Rare Pressed Fibre Tropical Helmet. A rare and unusual officer’s tropical pith helmet. It is a rare pressed fibre helmet that was made in Germany in the early 1930s and issued to the Navy, as Germany didn’t have any colonies by then. Unlike the later Pith helmets that were used by the Afrika Korps, these examples are very hard to find. The helmet started life with a German owner, as shown by the name HALLMANN written inside the liner. This helmet has, however, changed nationality. It has been acquired by an Italian Fascist soldier and has had the Italian military badges added to it. On the front is the gilt brass bade of the Alpini Artillery (Light Mountain troops). The black cross, instead of a number, means that the officer was unassigned to any particular regiment. On the side of the helmet is a large round cloth cockade in red-white-green (Italian State colours), with a Gilt metal Fasces emblem in the middle. The helmet is moulded and looks similar to the US WWII version. It is made of pressed fibre, which is strengthened and waterproofed in phenolic resin. The inside has a leather liner, which attaches to some resin coated blades, not unlike the style inside german helmets, via cloth loops. The inside of the helmet is lined in red felt. The helmet has been blancoed. The leather strap is brown with a sliding buckle. Very unusual and rare.
