This is an original and very rare steel helmet liner – Luftwaffe Fliegerstahlhelm Model SSK 90 manufactured by the Siemens Corporation. This helmet liner contains no visible makers marks. I do not possess the leather cover only this steel liner. I obtained this steel helmet liner from a long-time German collector. He had this helmet liner evaluated from a local historian who said it belongs in a military museum. The Luftwaffe adopted these helmets on 8 May 1941. Due to their weight, just over 4 pounds, these helmets were withdrawn from service on 26 May 1941, less than a month in service. These helmets we’re designed to be worn over the various types of standard Luftwaffe cloth and leather flight helmets. Made of hinged steel plates, these helmets we’re designed to protect the wearer from shrapnel wounds to the head. The SSK 90 helmets are more rare than any other standard issue flight helmets due to their limited issuance and use in combat. They are commonly misidentified as “German Jet Pilot” helmets.
