This is a rare and unique German Bundeswehr M35-50 helmet. The helmet is a size 62 as indicated inside the back side. The liner inside is marked as a size 53-57. This helmet has a distinctive liner that is not attached to a ring at the rim but instead is connected to the inside of the helmet dome with prongs meeting at the inside peak under a padded main attachment, and lined with a tanned, 8-flap leather lining secured with a boot-string-like cord. While I was trying to figure this out, I noticed a name written several times inside. This particular name bothered me the whole time, worrying that I might be on the wrong track trying to solve this mystery. Eventually, it all started to make sense when I quickly discovered that Spanish volunteers had fought alongside Germany during WWII. The name written inside this helmet reads: Rafael Almanzar Martinezy. Not a German name, but now it all became clear. This helmet belonged to a Spanish volunteer, one of the wearers of the M35-50 helmet: the Bundesgrenzschutz (BGS / “Federal Border Guard”), which was the first national-level armed service established in West Germany after WWII. Established on 16 March 1951 as a subordinate agency of the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the BGS initially focused on protecting West German borders. During their early days, BGS units had military structures, training, and equipment. The law enforcement officers legally held military combatant status until 1994. A significant number of early BGS personnel joined the newly founded German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) in 1956, contributing significantly to West Germany’s rearmament. The BGS was renamed Bundespolizei on 1 July 2005. Therefore, this helmet is very rare and special as it belonged to a Spanish volunteer. One more thing to note about this helmet is that there is another marking on the leather liner. In larger marker it reads: 332 C. I wonder what this means? In any case, this helmet would be a valuable addition to any militaria collection looking to include a named Spanish Guard Volunteer in their ensemble. Please see all photos. Potentially all Original German WW2 Blau Division Helmet M35. There are differences of opinion on whether the Decals were applied during the war. It looks to me like there are 2 failed attempts made to apply the decal properly. The two previous decals were removed but they kept the third. WWII German M42 SD Combat Helmet ET62 Battle Of Narva Find Foreign Volunteer. This was one of the first German helmets in my collection. This helmet was found in a basement located somewhere in Narva. This was a relic left behind from the Battle of Narva on the eastern front. You can see there once was a snow camo on this helmet along with a single decal. I believe that this is a SS foreign volunteer helmet mainly because the battle of Narva was mainly a SS battle and other german components were not really used. On top of that, the amount of white which makes up a shield shape. A German Heer eagle does not have as much white in a shield shape like that. This helmet is a M42 and has ET62 on the brim below the decal and 392 on the brim in the back. Heres some information about this topic. One variety of Waffen-SS helmet rarely encountered is that which contains an SS decal placed on the opposite side of what was standard regulation. Today collectors refer to these helmets as “reverse decal” in description. Over the past 10 years, SS helmet collectors have documented that this helmet configuration can be attributed to Dutch Waffen-SS volunteers serving in the SS. In some cases other examples have been documented as having originated with Belgian Waffen-SS volunteers. Collectors have noted this single decal reversed configuration on both M1940 and M1942 pattern helmets. Most helmets exhibit what advanced collectors believe to be the only “correct” configuration for an authentic helmet, and that being a first pattern C. Pocher manufactured runic decal (applied by the soldier not the factory) on the left side of the helmet (as opposed to the standard right side). However, some variations to this known configuration exist which clearly counters the notion that all foreign volunteer helmets must possess a C. Pocher decal to be authentic. Photographed below is a “CKL” manufactured M1942 helmet exhibiting the proper “second pattern bronze pulver” decal common to early ET (Thale) manufactured helmets of the era.
