German M40 Helmet, Camouflage, Original, withLiner
I originally listed this as 100% original, but I sent this to Kelly Hicks for an evaluation. It is a three tone reissue with sawdust mixed in for texture. Kelly’s opinion was that this original shell and original liner looked to have been together for a long time, but the very attractive paint job, inside and out was applied post-war. In other words, the camo paint was a fake, but very well done. I don’t see any evidence of original paint under the camo so the shell must have been stripped and painted. The photos show the condition, inside and out. The outside liner band on the left is stamped 64/56 and something else but I do not want to bend the band to read it all. On the right is stamped D. I know there are repro liners stamped with similar information, but the type size and style are noticeably different. Definitely not a European repro liner. The maker stamp is very difficult to read because of the thick paint, but it is EF and shell size is 64. The lot number is 22008. There is a painted-over decal on the left side which is probably a repro decal There is no maker stamp visible inside the dome. This would make a great helmet for a display or to fill a hole meant for an authentic camo costing well into four digits.
