For your consideration is an Austrian M16 (Stahlhelm) transitional helmet which has seen multiple period re-issues. Like Germany, Austria produced their version of the M16 Helmet with the major difference being the position of the chinstrap rivets being the most identified change. These Helmets went on to be used in the interwar period between the World Wars. They would be used by the Freikorps and later modified using the chinstrap and helmet liner traditionally seen in most German combat helmets (and here) in the Second World War. From observation multiple layers of period paint can be found on the helmet from being re-issued. It appears that the first re-issue had two sets of decals either painted (very early) or transfers (typical) and the most visible layer is hastily put on likely due to being re-issued to the Volkssturm. Made up of young boys and old men they were often ill equipped and outfitted with dated helmets and uniforms that were in short supply.
