WW2 GERMAN M1942 WAFFEN SS SINGLE DECAL STAHLHELM (STEEL HELMET) MANUFACTURED BY EISENHÜTTENWERKE IN 1943 & ckl CODE STAMPED ON THE NECK GUARD. An original WW2 German size 66 M1942 single decal Waffen SS Stahlhelm (Steel Helmet) manufactured by Eisenhüttenwerke in Thale in 1943. The helmet shell is in original condition with a very good patina commensurate with age and use. M44 Feldbluse (Field Blouse) with an Eisernes Kreuz 1939 2. Klasse (EK II) medal ribbon a photograph of which is attached to this listing. Most of the original wartime dark feldgrau (field grey) paint remains, while the factory applied Second Pattern Waffen SS decal is authentic and has not been painted over. The M1931 – Second Pattern Zinc liner system is original to the helmet with all three split pin rivet fasteners intact with their slotted washers. The original leather liner, which is correctly size stamped 58 , shows evidence of use and wear. The leather itself is scuffed and worn and is stamped with the size number 56 and the initials of its owner H. The rear skirt of the helmet is stamped ckl 66 and 3473. The manufacturers code ckl indicates that this M42 Stahlhelm was produced by Eisenhüttenwerke in Thale. The 66 is a the size marking (66cm) and the 3473 the helmet batch number. In Thale was the largest of all helmet production facilities during World War II. The Thale plant played a principle role in the preliminary and ongoing design of the new M1935 steel helmet that would eventually be worn by all combat troops of the German Armed Forces (Deutsche Wehrmacht). The Thale plant had began producing steel helmets for the German military during World War I. Thale engineers worked on the principle upgrades that modified the M1935 through various stages through M1940 and M1942 models (like this example). Up until 1943 helmets made by. Were marked with the code letters “ET”. In 1943 the firm changed to the new shell code marking ” ckl ” visible on this example. The code was initially stamped into the inside left rim but in late 1943 the stamping was moved to the rear of the helmet where it remained until May 1945. This code marking combined with the fact that the helmet is marked with a single authentic factory applied second pattern SS decal, a practice that was discontinued in late 1943, confirm the manufacture date. Was the largest producer of German steel helmets (Stahlhelm) during the Second World War. This helmet has not been restored, repainted or refurbished and is in very good original condition. Original Second World War M1942 that have not been improved or repainted (or had false decals applied) are becoming increasingly rare. You will not go far wrong with this very good example.
