Original M40 WWII German STAHLHELM Helmet m35 Q66 large shell Alexander Restored
Professionally restored original WWII M40 German (single decal) Stahlhelm helmet in large-size 66 shell & 59 liner. This design is the next version / model made after the M35 helmets had ceased to be made and were made from 1940 until about 1942… When the next version came out. Professionally restored by Alexander & Sons Restorations. Alexander & Sons have faithfully restored this represent an early to mid-war repaint with a the less shiny dark field-gray with some texture to help break-up potential shine… This helmet’s story…. The helmet liner was about mid-grade and the chin strap was decent w/ appropriate 1940 markings. The main thing that originally concerned me was the paint job. It really didn’t do the helmet justice. I just was not satisfied with it and it was starting to wear-off anyway. So, it has not been worn in a reenactment ever since. I sent it to Alexander & Son’s where they preformed their art of restoring it properly. It received a paint overhaul stripping the old “repop” paint layer(s) to get to where it needed to be, adding the appropriate correct paint w/ some texture and single decal for that great early to mid-war and beyond look. Slight edge-wear do to being on the shelf. The paint is the thinnest there. The liner being new and NOT worn will seem a little snug for a 59 liner / 66 shell, because the leather is so new and has not been used, sweat in, etc. It WILL loosen up a little as the leather “breaks-in” and that is straight from the restoration man himself. He uses the highest of quality liners(I believe from the Czech Republic) with super nice quality leather, period correct in every way right down to the marking stamps in the metal, the wool cushioning used in between the metal liner and the liner, to the string used to cinch the top of the leather liner together. Its been a superb addition to my modest helmet collection on display and starting to collect some dust. I have an almost identical helmet w/ same configuration and I do not need two of the same helmet so this can find its way to a good home.
